Ellen Page & Laverne Cox | GLAAD Media Awards 2014

I am firmly against cultural appropriation, but I don’t agree with the statements saying that Avril Lavigne’s new video for “Hello Kitty” is appropriating Japanese Culture.

Almost all of Avril’s fanbase exists in Japan. This particular song and video were made specifically to cater to her Japanese fans. The video was shot in Japan, and the video has only been promoted through Japanese TV shows, etc. The song is being released as a single in Asia only, not North America. The whole entire purpose of this song and video was to produce something for her Japanese fans. Plus, the girls aren’t even sexualized as some are saying in the video.

Avril is not marketing this song across the globe. It’s not uploaded to her vevo account even. The thing is that she made this video for her japanese fans
